In the UK we have traditionally heated our homes using a gas or oil-fired boiler, which burns fossil fuel and heats water which is pumped through pipes and radiators. In other countries, including Scandinavia and mainland Europe, a different and more efficient technology has become well established and is now gaining interest here.

Heat pumps are not a new technology, but the application for home heating - producing a source of hot water just like a ‘traditional’ boiler - is a relatively new idea in the UK. Although you may not be familiar with the term 'heat pump' it refers to a machine that uses refrigeration to transfer heat efficiently from one place to another. The technology is certainly not new and is in every home, in the form of a fridge, and in many shops, offices and vehicles as air conditioners.

Leading manufacturers, such as Mitsubishi, Sanyo and Daikin have now developed compact and efficient 'heat pump boilers' designed to work with existing pipe work and radiator systems, with as little alteration required as possible.

For new properties the efficiency can be further improved by using under-floor heating. The system would also provide the hot water supply, with the option of adding solar hot water heating too, for increased efficiency. Once installed the controls would be operated in the same way as a standard heating system.

The equipment has lower running costs than gas or oil fired equipment (being up to 3 times more efficient) and produces 30 - 50% less carbon emissions. So, whether from a long term cost point of view, or the desire to reduce ones carbon footprint, a heat pump boiler is a very good option.

A working demonstration system is available to view at the Hailsham offices of Aspen Heat Pumps. Please contact us on 0845 873 8861 or email for further information.
